When I first saw the ad for this game on TV, I thought, 'this is a videogame?'
Squaresoft went all out for this one, showing the true power of the Playstation, at the time. This game redefined the term RPG. The opening FMV (for those of you who don't know, that stand for Full Motion Video) is spectacular, but a little long. They touched up on every little detail, blending Anime with computer graphics. Here come the only big flaw in the game. The character models. They all look like fat, deformed midgets, with a serious lack of texturing, though they did a good job on the shading. Square sometimes made the characters act the way they look to give the game a more humorous feel (Palmer and Barret). All though there wasn't much texturing in the battle sequences either, they countered for that by using much better looking 3D models.
You play as Cloud, the ex-soldier turned mercenary who now works with a terrorist group call AVALANCHE. They are trying to destroy all of the 'Mako reactors' which are sucking the life energy out of the planet. By destroying them, AVALANCHE believes they can save the planet. But the company that built, and maintains these reactors, Shin-Ra Inc., doesn't like having there machines destroyed. Oh, I've said enough, you have to play the game yourself to find out the rest of the story, which will take you a very long time.
